As discussed last week, our weight loss "secret" is to reduce calories (3,500 calories per pound you want to lose).
You have 4 options to accomplish this:
- Eat smaller quantities of food (less amount = less calories).
- Eat healthier foods (less calories).
- Be more physically active (uses more calories).
- Some combination thereof.
People who choose a combination tend to report quicker & larger amounts of weight loss. In the process, these people also tend to create healthier lifestyle behaviors which leads to better long-term success.
The National Weight Control Registry tracks over 10,000 Americans who have successfully lost at least 30 pounds & kept it off for years. (The average is 66 pounds & 5.5 years!). The whole story is at http://www.nwcr.ws/Research/default.htm. But, here are a few of their "secrets"...
- 98% modified their food intake in some way.
(For example, 78% report eating breakfast every day.)
- 94% increased their physical activity.
(The most frequently reported activity was walking.)
There is variety in how NWCR members keep the weight off. Most report continuing to maintain a low calorie, low fat diet and doing high levels of activity.

Still unsure how to apply this to your life? Our "Getting Started" WLC class might help! On Tues. 4/3, we'll discuss the basics of choosing healthy foods, judging portion size, & adding physical activity into your life. Class is held at 5:30-6:15pm at Maria Parham's Auditorium & again at 7:15-8pm at Oxford Public Works. BTW, there's no pre-registration, no pressure, no guilt, no products or services for sale, & no charge to attend.
Directions to Maria Parham Medical Center's Auditorium:
From the hospital's main entrance, take the first right (look for signs). Drive around the side of the hospital (you'll see the back of the YMCA). There's plenty of parking nearby. Enter the building via the double doors under the overhang. Walk down the hallway & look for the Auditorium to be on your left.
Notes for Oxford Public Works:
There's plenty of parking in the lot. When looking at the front of the building, enter through the double doors on the right.

If you have any questions, please post them to the blog.
If you can't attend Tues, stay tuned... We'll discuss each concept on the blog as the WLC continues.
But, hope to see you on Tues at 5:30 in Henderson or 7:15 in Oxford!
